Steve West riding 7yo Ballytruckle Sally Gap won the 2012 Northland Low Hunter Series. It was the debut season for both of them in Showhunter, the Low Hunter jumps are 70 and 80cm and are intended to help the transition to full competition. Steve learned to jump 2 years ago on my hunter Welsh cob Minbarra Lord Nelson. Steve started Sally under saddle as a 4 yo, did some endurance on her, then some treks but found them too boring, then he started to hunt her - at first gating but progressing to jumping and now he's bitten by the competition bug.

Sally is an awesome mare - she never stops at a jump, she always gives it a go and the less interference you give her the better she is, she sees her own stride, she shortens and lengthens as she sees it and has so much scope she can be scarey taking off so far back from a jump, but just sit nice and still, pose in the correct style and this mare will carry you round - she never rushes, rhythm is her middle name. Sally lives to jump.

We realised we had a good shot at the title when Steve won every class he entered at one show and Katherine Martin won 3 out of 4 classes at the Northland 2* Show. So we started to enter every Northland show- but the organisers kept adding new shows to their program due to the consistent rains keeping the surface perfect. In the finish the series title became a lesson in endurance. We are thrilled we won it as it was a lot of fun and we had some serious competition who were always close on our heels.
