Win at HOY 2012 icing on the cake

Ballytruckle Shamrock 14-1 and a half hh Welsh cob X tb mare ridden by 13yo Katherine Martin had a fabulous time at HOY.

It was the second time our stud has competed at HOY so we were thrilled to come away with a handful of ribbons from 9 classes.

Our week started with the Welsh ring on the Tuesday, with 3 classes, 2 in-hand and one ridden. The classes were very well patronised and Shamrock was ridden in the pitch black after 8pm. There were no lights to illuminate the ring. However we were thrilled to get placed in two of our three classes with a 6th in an In-hand class and a 5th in the ridden. Most classes had about 19 entries which showed the huge level of support for the Welsh ring.

The next day we had an early start with 4 Showhunter Category C pony classes. Shammy was in fine fettle and we got a second place in the first class, then won the second class and a 6th in the 3rd with scores in the 80s. The fourth class wasnt so good with a 22nd place from a score of 72. Each class had 42 entries from all over New Zealand so we were very thrilled to have got such amazing placings.

Thursday was a day off for everyone, Katherine and I took turns hand grazing Shamrock, and recharging her battery.

On Friday Katherine rode the Equitation class - she was placed 8th.

Saturday was the Showhunter Category C Pony of the Year title class, during Shamrocks round an accident in the adjacent SJ ring where a competitor collapsed the wall 5m from Shammy as she approached her final two fences resulted in her spooking. Shammy turned and approached again but held her head high in fear. We were placed 11th so missed out on the call back.

We were thrilled by our results and are already planning next year.
